Robert:
Just came back from our house in Maine where I hunted there for the
first time with Nell. She really did great. We hunted ducks and
woodcock almost every day last week.
Nell rode in the canoe(it has a 5HP motor on it) out to the spot along
the shoreline where we would set up the decoys. She stands with her
front paws on the edge of the canoe and scans the water and sky for
birds. She runs around a bit while we wait for some ducks but is
generally pretty well behaved. I don’t expect her to sit quietly like a
lab that’s been trained to duck hunt. She marked the fall of every duck
and made some impressive retrieves. One ring neck duck that was wounded
took her about 250 yards out across a pond before she finally got it.
I can pick Nell(with a duck in her mouth) out of the water and into the
canoe with one hand! For a dog that never duck-hunted she is incredible!
After the second day, she had it totally figured out!
The weather was unseasonably mild but she did still get a bit cold as
each morning went on. I was very careful not to let her get too
chilled. I haven’t found a neoprene vest that will fit her yet, but I’m
working on it! (Any help in this regard would be appreciated.)
She found woodcock wherever we hunted. She hunted close and flushed
birds in shooting range. I took Nell to a a spot where I had never
hunted before, so I wasn’t sure of the territory, but Nell found birds.
Fantastic! I’m back in San Diego now and looking forward to quail
hunting this winter with her. The family can’t imagine life with out
Nell!
Hope all goes well with you. Stay in touch.

Hi Bob!
It was such fun to come and
visit Kaitlyn last weekend, and watch you training with her. I can’t
believe it’s been nearly five months since she went to stay with you – I
never thought I’d be able to without her for so long!!! But, coming out to
visit when I can, seeing the great progress she has been making with you,
and seeing how happy and eager she is to be out in the field working with
you, well, it really is worth it to get such great results. It seems that
she is becoming this great little gun dog, just “all about the hunt,” with a
lot of drive and pace and energy, and yet out of the field she is as sweet
and loving as ever, still my favorite little “cuddle-pup.” I can’t wait
until she goes to a hunt test to see how she will do!
So I am now very much
looking forward to sending Oscar to you for training later this year. With
results like these, I’ll probably never see either of my pups again during
hunting season - they will always be out playing in the fields with my
hunting friends – but that’s ok, they both love it and will be happier dogs
because of it. I can see them now, lying about in the evenings, asleep in
front of the fireplace while it snows outside, and twitching away as they
dream over the day’s successful hunting.
So thanks for letting me
come out and watch you train with Kate and the other dogs you have in
training at your place, I learn something new every time! You are a great
trainer and a hard worker, and you deserve all the success your efforts are
going to bring you. I am looking forward to continuing to work with you to
bring out the very best that my dogs have in them.
See you next weekend, Judy |

Dear Bob
Had a good
hunt today. We put a few pounds on him for the winter because he is
outside so much and I think he was a little out of shape today. He
actually wanted to rest and drink a few times. He also took a little
swim to cool off. He trapped one hen and had another good blind
retreive in the woods. He put up 5 of 6 birds released. The hens were
not flying and there was no wind.
It was
great just whistle command him, no yelling or chasing! You did a good
job with him.
Best
regards, Bud and Roberta

Hi Bob,
Finally, here is a picture of Finch, Nell and Merlin's pup from 11/3/04.
Although we don't hunt with him, he is all work and so focused and
obedient when we take him on trails for walks. He's in the thicket and
brush trying to flush out whatever he can and doesn't hesitate to jump in
the stream or ocean to chase down a bird or retrieve a stick. And when a
runner or biker goes by us, he is sits at our feet waiting until he gets the
command to go. We had lost our previous ECS of 15 years the day I called you
looking for a puppy. We don't know what we would do without Finch. He is a
great family dog, especially with the kids and he does something funny or
special every day. |

Hey Bob,
Thanks for letting us come out and see the pups again. My wife and kids
really enjoy spending time with all the dogs.
I've really enjoy helping you with the training of Jake and Joe. I've
learned a lot just by watching you with the dogs and hopefully, will be able
to duplicate it when I'm in the field. I especially like being your "gunner"
while training with pigeons. Not only do I get to learn more about training
dogs, but I get to work on my marksmanship! I'm really excited for you and
the dogs. I can't wait until the field trials this Fall because I know they
will do well. Keep up the good work in training!

Hi Bob,
Just thought you
would like to see my
turbo charged
“Jazz” with a Nebraska pheasant.
She has proved to be
everything you said she would be……. Except you did not mention she
would also be the favorite member of the family to all. She is the
gentlest, most affectionate pup in the house that I have ever seen,
however; when she goes into the field she is on a mission to seek and
destroy every pheasant in the field. That’s when we call her “The
Jazzmanian Devil”. I think I mentioned before that we have another
English Cocker “Sam” also a Minnesotan and she is 9 and still a very
good hunter, but I can never remember her being able to cover the ground
that Jazz can cover, Jazz will walk me into the ground and she just
keeps that tail a waggin!!
Thanks again from my
ENTIRE FAMILY, (my wife thinks that Jazz is really her dog)
